Coach Shanahan Held a Press Conference Today

Shanahan

Washington Redskins Head Coach, Mike Shanahan, held a pre-draft press conference today from Redskins Park.  If you wanted you could have watched it on a live feed at their web site.  I watched it and I have to say, I'm no smarter than I was before it started.

It was as you expected it would be.  Lots of questions from staff reporters that are under the employ of one Daniel Snyder.  Softball questions are tossed about, Mike Shanahan gives soft, vague answers in many instances.

And I wrote that last paragraph before it started.

So what did they ask?

  • RG3?
  • Andrew Luck?
  • Free Agency?

Yep, yep and yep.Since the Colts have finally gone and made an honest woman out of Andrew Luck, that leaves the true number one pick to fall to the Redskins on Thursday night.  I say that because it's a mere formality of announcing Andrew Luck's name, handing him a shitty Colts #1 jersey and posing for a few choice pictures with Commissioner Goodell.

The Redskins will then be on the clock.  And they'd be fools to waste any time turning in their pick for RG3 immediately.  Just go ahead, hand him a shitty Redskins jersey with #1 on it, pose with Commissioner "Hang 'em High" Goodell and get on with the rest of the first round. They did speak about Jabar Gaffney and his nonsense.  Shanahan, ever the politician, said that Gaffney was given the chance to look around the league for a better opportunity or he can come back and compete for a spot with the Redskins.  Was his Twitter tirade any part of the reason they let him go?  Hell no, that's silly.  Shanahan doesn't even know what a Twitter is.  At his age, he thinks that's a euphamism for a vagina.

How much work do you need to do with RG3 coming from Baylor?  Or will you change everything to suit him?

"You change something for every quarterback."  And Coach went through all of his previous QB's in Denver and what all they had to change and adapt to better suit the talents and skills of the player in order to give him every opportunity to succeed.

That's a smart thing to say.  You can't force a player into a scheme, you have to adapt.  And when you've only had McNabb, Grossman and Beck to work with, it's hard to design a scheme for shit, shit and shit.  It remains to be seen if RG3 can get up to speed in a hurry. Why'd you bring Rex Grossman back?   Hahahahahahahahaha!

"Alot of it has to do with needing a supporting cast.  He knows the system."  And that's all Mike had to say about that.

If you ask me, it's because you go with the devil you know over the devil you don't.  Rex is by no means a good quarterback, but he's familiar with the scheme, the playbook and the players for the most part.  He has been a starting QB in the NFL for a number of years and sometimes, the best mentors for young players are veterans who aren't super stars.

How much do you think Brett Favre, Joe Montana or Peyton Manning worked to teach their backups?  Almost none, if you're being honest.  The greats don't teach, they perform.

So, after half an hour of streaming, Shanahan got the hell outta Dodge, and we're no more informed now than we were at 1pm when it started.
